URBANA -- It took a group effort to clean up the roads after an early morning oil spill. A truck carrying used motor oil spilled in I-74 near Lincoln Avenue. It didn't stop there. The driver kept going; continuing down I-74 eastbound. State troopers pulled the rig over near Oakwood, which is about 20 minutes away.
Officers say a valve on the truck opened and the oil leaked onto the Lincoln Avenue Bridge down to Cunningham Avenue. Urbana firefighters, Illinois Sate Police and IDOT all assisted in the clean-up using a type of sand to absorb the oil. Crews acted quickly to get things clean up.
The truck belongs to a company called Safety Kleen. It's out of Texas but have a facility in Urbana. The ramp heading to I-74 was closed from 8:30 am - 1:30 pm. Lincoln Avenue was reopened about 1 pm.
The EPA was contacted about the incident. The truck is currently out of service. Safety Kleen says there isn't anything on the truck which would have notified the driver he had a leak. Company officials say it was a malfunction on the truck, not a driver error, but the incident is still under investigation.
