CHAMPAIGN -- Police are investigating an accident. It happened about 12:40 am, Friday, near Bradley and Walnut.

Authorities say an officer tried to conduct a traffic stop on Garden Hills for the registered owner of a vehicle having a suspended license. The driver sped up and tried to flee the scene.

The officer turned off his lights and siren and did not attempt to stop the car on Summerlin. A second police car was nearly hit by the suspect vehicle but never tried to stop it.

A short time later, the vehicle struck a utility pole at the Bradley and Walnut intersection. A passenger fled the vehicle and was later found in the 1200-block of Walnut Street.

The driver was found unresponsive. First aid was given until an ambulance arrived. The driver was taken to the hospital.
