Fire destroys barn

HOMER, Ill. (WCIA) -- It took no less than eight fire departments to tame the flames that ripped through a three-story barn in homer Friday.

They respond to a farm just east of homer around 2 P.M.

Firefighters said the wind caught left over ashes from a brush fire the farmer was burning earlier that day. He was not there when the barn went up in flames.

Instead a neighbor called 911 -- not because of what he saw but because of what he heard.

"Which was my wife running into the house frantic because she noticed the barn was on fire," said neighbor Scott Hess. "My concern was the heat coming off the barn. It burned a couple of trees and the side of the house was heating up."

Home Fire Chief Don Happ said it was the biggest fire he'd seen in a year. No one was hurt.
