SPRINGFIELD -- A group of local 1st graders wanted to do their part to help tornado victims. They've turned a teacher's lesson plan into a plea for help.

It was a big assignment. These 1st graders at Owen Marsh Elementary were learning about persuasive writing. And, it doesn't get much more persuasive than this.

They asked their classmates to donate everything from diapers to toilet paper and baby wipes. That's exactly what they did. In just three days, the 1st graders collected all this stuff.

Their teacher says the lesson encompassed a lot of different classwork. They learned writing, social studies by looking at Washington on the map, and math, counting all they collected. They're taking all those supplies to a local drive Saturday.

But an important note, Washington city leaders issued a press release. They're only currently asking for monetary donations. They've gotten so many other supplies, there just isn't room to store them all.
