CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) -- Meeting someone who has run in prestigious events all over the world including the London Marathon, Boston Marathon, and Chicago Marathon is something that is likely surprising. What is even more surprising is that the man who has done them all didn't begin running until he was in his 70s.
Hans Henseler, 79, describes running as his "true passion" however it is a passion he did not discover until recently. It began in 2009 when a group of colleagues challenged him to run the Christie Clinic Illinois Half Marathon. After running the 13 miles, and placing first in the 70+ age group, he knew he discovered his new love.
"I loved it and I immediately signed up for a 5K, a 10K, and another half marathon in Chicago." says Henseler
Over the past eight years Henseler has run in nearly 90 different events. Each time he runs serves as an opportunity to inspire others to never let your age stop you from pursuing your passion. He works to send a message that whether it is running or a different activity, finding something you care about is key.
"Whatever you do, don't give up. and it will pay off in the long run. It paid off for me." says Henseler
Hans has no plans to slow down anytime soon. He will be running the Christie Clinic Illinois Half Marathon once again this year, and has numerous other running events on the calendar for 2018.
