The family was blindsided by who the suspect is. Like any mother, Brenda Shaw had a close relationship with her son, Larry Carter.
"I always worried about him."
Some would say they were inseparable.
"He likes to sing. He likes to sing."
Shaw still finds herself speaking about him in the present tense. Like her daughters, they haven't been able to let go.
"Words cannot describe the way I feel."
This was the scene last May. Carter was found dead, just a few feet away from where the family came to mourn.
"On Mother's Day. He got killed on Mother's Day."
But now, more than a year later, they're sharing a different hug.
"I'm glad they got him."
Their happiness is shadowed by shock. The man arrested for the murder is 27-year old Edward Woodfork. He was a family friend who grew up with Carter. He even turned up at the crime scene.
"He came up to me and gave me a hug."
"I had no words. I couldn't do anything but scream."
Police provided enough evidence to put Carter behind bars for murder. Although it will never be enough to make this mother forget, she finds comfort in the fact police didn't forget either.
"I won't celebrate Mother's Day. It's closure now. They got him and there will be justice."
"I'll still move on and live my life, but he'll always be in my heart. Always."
Woodfork is being held without bond. Police say they are not looking for anyone else in connection to the case.
