CHAMPAIGN -- Hundreds of firefighters from around the Midwest have been feeling the heat of some hands-on training. They've been putting out blazes at the Fire Service Institute in Champaign.

About 500 men and women put out real-life fires; up to hundreds of degrees Fahrenheit. First responders from all levels of experience took classes this weekend. Now they can take the skills they've learned back home.

Organizers said the majority of firefighters in the state are volunteers, which makes training like this even more important. First responders also practiced recovering victims who were trapped in cars.
