GIBSON CITY -- A farmer hopes people are more careful after a field fire destroyed nearly 100 acres of his land. It started Saturday afternoon about a mile southeast of Gibson City.

It took four fire departments almost five hours to put it out. The damage stretches more than a mile across three properties.

The fire chief says a homeowner was doing a controlled burn, but high winds caused it to spread. Landowner Gerald Thompson says right beside a field that has just been harvested, it does not take much.

"There's a lot of fuel for that fire and once it's going with that wind, it just, I don't know how long it took, but probably not over 15 minutes to travel over almost a mile."

Thompson is thankful for the people who kept the fire from getting worse. He says the homeowner who started it has been cooperative with the sheriff's office.
