COLES COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) -- A woman accused of murdering her 2-year old son appeared in court Monday. Police say 22-year old Savannah Weiss left Malachi England alone for more than two days.

The boy's grandmother found him dead in a Pack and Play. Police say there was garbage, animal feces and unsealed needles on the floor of the home.

Malachi was only given two pb&j sandwiches and a bottle of vitamin water with a hole in the lid. The state's attorney says he died of dehydration and starvation.

Monday, Weiss was appointed a public defender and appeared in court on closed circuit TV. Weiss is being held on $1.5 million bond. She'll be in court again next week for her pre-trial.

COLES COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) -- A Charleston woman is charged with first degree murder after reportedly leaving her toddler alone for more than 48-hours.

He was found in a Pack-and-Play, face down. He died of dehydration or starvation. 22-year old Savannah Weiss was arrested Wednesday. It happened in the 1000-block of 1st Street.

Weiss allegedly tried to pin the murder on her friend. She sat in the back of court and broke down over the accusation.

"I told her, if she ever needed a babysitter, to let me know."

But, Weiss took advantage of that statement. Emily Snively says she was called in for questioning by police Tuesday.

"It became apparent the mother said I was watching her child."

Police say Weiss later admitted leaving her child unattended from 10 am Friday to 6 pm Sunday. She told police she was at the hospital multiple times or with her boyfriend.

"Even if I had to go to the hospital, I wouldn't do that."

Monday morning, Weiss finally checked on the toddler and found him unresponsive. Her mother had to convince her to call 911. She was saying, "No, I'm going to go to prison."

"Police found it full of garbage."

They found the 2-year old dead in his playpen.

Snively wants to know why Weiss tried to blame her. She says she loves kids and Weiss' toddler was no exception.

Weiss is being held on $1.5 million bond.
