Flu deaths hit region

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) -- The health department says seven people reportedly died of influenza or pneumonia last month. None of those deaths were children.

New information from the CDC shows the number of people heading to the hospital for the flu has reached an all time high. As of Friday, 53 children have died in the United States this season.

Health department officials say this flu season is harsh compared to the past five years.

This is extremely concerning to those in healthcare because we haven't reached the peak of the season.

People are urged to get the flu shot especially when you start to see the signs and symptoms.

"When you start to get that fever, stuffiness or body aches, sore throat, cough, as soon as you start to get those symptoms you need to be seen. Tamiflu only works in the first 48 hours usually so we want to make sure you get seen and treated right away," Carle Senior Infection Preventionist, Taffy Creviston.

One thing health experts have stressed is that people have to get the shot to stay protected.

If you haven't gotten it you need to because even though this strain is bad there could be another strain on the way.

If you still haven't gotten your flu shot, you can stop into local clinics, pharmacies, or your doctors office.
