DECATUR -- A retired captain with the Macon County Sheriff's Department is arrested and accused of theft. The department conducted an internal audit of the financial account after Steve Jones' retirement. The findings of that audit raised concerns.

Sheriff Tom Schneider contacted the Illinois State Police Zone 5 Investigations Division and the Macon County State's Attorney's Office and requested an investigation. That investigation ended with Jones' arrest Tuesday. He's accused of stealing funds from the department starting in 2003.

The stolen funds did not include taxpayer money. The money was seized from criminal defendants involved in buying and/or selling illegal drugs. The department has since put measures in place to ensure the proper oversight of these funds.
