MACON COUNTY -- A former health department employee was arrested for felony theft and official misconduct. Investigators with the sheriff's office say Anika Smith, 43, failed to take multiple deposits to the bank, beginning in December. Smith was fired from the health department in January.

The deposits consisted of cash and personal checks. Detectives were able to recover the missing personal checks worth more than $2,300, but more than $1,400 cash remains unaccounted for. Smith posted $500 cash bond and is due back in court March 28.
