OAKWOOD -- 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled across I-74 Saturday. A diesel tank on a semi broke, spilling gas on the highway. It happened outside Danville near Kickapoo State Park.

The oil ran down a ditch and threatened to run into a pond. Hazmat crews eventually contained the spill, but a firefighter says it would have caused a lot of problems had it gotten into the water.

Kickapoo Assistant Fire Chief Josey Jordan says, "If it gets into the waterway, or gets into the pond, depending on what the quantity of diesel fuel is, it could cause environmental issues like a small fish kill, it could effect the vegetation, stuff like that."

Environmental crews will finish cleaning up the federally protected park. None of the people in the water had to evacuate.
