CHAMPAIGN -- Every penny earned from this community garage sale will be donated to cancer research.
The volunteers have seen how cancer affects people they love.and this is just one way to show their support. Garage sales are pretty common. But this one is unique.
Jill Rannebarger coordinated it. She says, "I dedicate a lot of time to raise funds to have research and programs for cancer patients."
It's a cause that means a lot to her.
"Finding a cure for cancer is very important to me. It's hit my family hard, my mom, my dad, my husband. I just think it's very important and we have to find a cure. Too many people are affected by this."
That's why she dedicates her time raising money to for cancer research. The money from the garage sale will be donated to the American Cancer Society. She's been doing it for the past six years each garage sale makes about three thousand dollars.
Sherry Fisher comes every year, and she's a cancer survivor herself. She says, "I had uterine cancer and a hysterectomy. I was very fortunate and didn't have to have any treatment."
Even though she's now cancer free, that doesn't stop her from supporting the effort to find a cure.
"It's important to spend our money wisely for good efforts."
People say they were happy they bought things they wanted, but even happier that their money is going to a good cause. They've done these garage sales many times, and in total they've raised about 75 thousand dollars for cancer research. Twenty families donated items for the garage sale, and there's still a lot of good things left. If you want to go you still have time. They'll be open from 8am-2pm Sunday May 20th. It's located at 1505 W. Charles Street in Champaign.
