URBANA -- Several homes were evacuated while Ameren fixed a gas leak. It happened on the corner of North Broadway and Crystal Lake Drive.

Things are back to normal for the most part now. People are allowed to return home about 1:30 pm.

About 11 am, a contractor hit a gas main. Firefighters were dispatched to secure the area. They evacuated homes in the 600 - 800 blocks of North Broadway, as well as Crystal Lake to Cunningham.

Ameren shut off the leak about 1:15, then crews began repairs. Crews made sure to warn people to stay away. Crews say roughly 15 - 20 homes were without power for a few hours.

Ameren says it will continue to work throughout the evening until all repairs are made.
