CHAMPAIGN -- The fire department is getting safer. It's thanks to a grant from the state Fire Marshal's office. It awarded almost 200 departments grant money for safety equipment, protective clothing and other tools.

Champaign's department applied for about $25,000. It was to buy more hand-held radios. The acting fire chief says, right now they only have enough for on-duty firefighters. If there is ever a big fire, they don't have enough for all their manpower.

Other departments receiving grants include Georgetown, Gifford and Tolono.
