CHAMPAIGN -- City leaders may soon have more money to deal with vacant homes around town. The city council will talk about taking a $50,000 grant from the Illinois Housing Development. The money can be used to tear down or fix eyesores. With extra money in the budget, the city can now take down about five more houses.

Mayor Don Gerard says, "We've seen that with the decline of some of our neighborhoods, it's very important to address these vacant structures, and it's very important for those who live in the neighborhood to have the local government's backing to do something about it."

The mayor says accepting the grant would move neighborhood revitalization forward. The city may even look at allocating more money to take care of what they call "nuisance homes."
