Gubernatorial candidates hope to lose gas tax

ILLINOIS -- There's a plan underway to curb high gas prices. Two Republican candidates vying for the gubernatorial nomination say they want to put the brakes on the state's gas tax. shows the average price per gallon Thursday is $3.40. That's $0.14 higher than the national average. Illinois is one of seven states which levies a sales tax on top of a gasoline tax.
