SPRINGFIELD -- The state's first hand transplant program has launched at the Institute for Plastic Surgery at the SIU School of Medicine. It will join an area hospital and clinic in the new project.

Doctors will reattach and transplant hands and upper limbs. It's based on work which is already being done by SIU, Memorial Transplant Services and the Springfield Clinic.

The Memorial Medical Center Foundation gave almost $3 million grant to make this all possible. It will help to provide care to as many as five patients.
