CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) -- School is back in session and that means head lice are back too, but this time around some of the pesky insects are resistant to the standard treatments.
They're called super lice. They can't be killed by the common over the counter treatments and require a prescription shampoo to get rid of them. The only way they spread is by direct contact.
"Every single year at the beginning of the school year there's spreading of lice. That is because kids get together and they congregate together and they share hats and combs and brushes. They lay together on the rugs."
If you or your child gets head lice wash your hair with treatment shampoo. That will get rid of all the live lice. And make sure to use a knit comb to remove all the eggs. There are several other steps you should take to prevent it from spreading again. For more information visit the public health district's website.
