CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- Most smokers will tell you quitting is one of the hardest things to do. But, an area health class is doing its best to make that last drag, just that, the last one. The story of how one person changed her life and another is in the early stages of changing his are in this week's A Healthier You. Lony Folts stopped smoking February 7, 2012.
"I am a non-smoker."
And has seen her life change because of it.
"I can run if I want to run. If I want to bicycle, I bicycle. I do whatever I want to do."
Folts smoked for nearly 25 years and wanted to quit several times. But, joining a public health class taught her some harsh realities.
"In the last class I learned, I stopped several times, but this time, I quit."
Nikki Hillier is one of the teachers. She uses her experience as a former smoker to relate to the class. Folts credits her with much of her success.
"She's the perfect teacher for the class. She's been there, done it and did it."
Now Hillier is helping a new group of smokers kick the habit. For Jack Pritchard, quitting could save his life.
"I have lung cancer."
Pritchard has smoked since he was 14. He's been trying to quit for ten years, so he knows how hard the road ahead will be.
"I'm actually worried about, can I make it or not? I'm down low enough, I feel I can give it one good shot."
Folts has a message for Pritchard and anyone else trying to quit.
"Even if you do slip, try again, keep trying. Just keep trying."
The class has about a 25% success rate.

CHAMPAIGN -- For a smoker, quitting can be one of the hardest things to do. But, a class could help. It's a seven-week course held at CUPHD. It offers support and techniques, like a book which holds a person accountable for the amount of cigarettes he or she smokes by writing them down.
One teacher smoked for ten years and knows everyone quits in a different way. Leaders say the class has about a 25% success rate. The class is full, but you can call CUPHD to get on a waiting list.
