One of the people getting an award is just 8-years old. Jerry Gabel says he didn't have to think; he just knew what to do. Now, his neighbor says she'll always be grateful for what he did.
Sharon Barnes loves living in her neighborhood with her dog, Bailey. But sometimes, her dog likes to do some exploring on her own.
"I was chasing my dog and I got her cornered in Joy's driveway," said Barnes.
When she caught up to the dog, Barnes tried to pick her up, but, by then, she was out of breath. Her 8-year old neighbor, Jerry, saw her from across the street.
"When I walked outside, she was on the ground with her dog running around in circles all around her," said Jerry. "I didn't run in. I dashed and told Mammaw to call the police."
"I was kind of panicking because I didn't even think about CPR," said Jerry's grandmother, Joy Gabel. "I just thought she was gone."
"It was honestly the scariest call I've ever had," said Urbana Police Officer Shannon Wolfe. "It's just one of those things, you know, could always happen, but you never want to happen."
Officer Wolfe gave Barnes CPR, which brought her back to life.
"Without her and Joy and Jerry and all the paramedics and ambulance personnel, I wouldn't be here today," said Barnes. "But it's Jerry that saved my life."
"I did," said Jerry. "I'm very happy and proud."
Barnes spent some time in the hospital, but she's fine now.
This was the first time Officer Wolfe used CPR on someone. She was also honored as Urbana Police Officer of the Year.
Fourteen other people were also honored by Urbana Police. Doctors Brin Schuler and Robert Woodward gave first aid to two students hit by a driver on the UI campus in October. Officers Rich Coleman and Ron Timmons helped recover stolen guns in Septemenber. Sergeants Cory Koker and Brian Willfong gave a woman CPR at the Sweet Corn Festival in August.
