HOOPESTON -- Word of the fire spread quickly. Pretty soon, everyone had to leave their homes and head outside. The mayor says they hope to be able to have people return to their homes Wednesday night, but they're not sure if that's possible.

Families within about a mile radius had to be evacuated. Some of the smoke has cleared, but the building has been destroyed. Most of the roof caved in during the fire.

Neighbors say they still can't believe it happened. People from all over the city are pitching in to help. Restaurants are bring water and food to firefighters. Even people from hospitals and schools are doing what they can.

The Red Cross is opening a shelter at the First Church of God at 6 pm.
