CHAMPAIGN -- Drivers have been wondering why some of the roughest stretches of road haven't been getting potholes filled. It's because IDOT leaders decided some roads were so bad, they need to be completely redone.

Emergency crews started working on Mattis Avenue Tuesday. So far, they scraped off the top layer of asphalt. After crews finish taking off the top layer, they plan to put down a smooth layer this week.

Drivers say they're happy to see progress. Workers will perform the same process on parts of Springfield Avenue and I-74 in Piatt and DeWitt counties. IDOT requested emergency funds, but if those don't come in, they'll move money around to pay for it.
