CHAMPAIGN -- Nine Illinois colleges are coming together to make their campuses safer. It's part of a pilot program called "Ready to Respond."

Workers at the state's Emergency Management Agency came up with the idea. The program recognizes schools meeting high standards for students, staff and anyone else who comes to campus.

Colleges have to have plans in place for identifying hazards, preventing violence and managing situations that could come up. The University of Illinois and Parkland College are both involved in the program already.
