HOOPESTON -- The Illinois
Environmental Protection Agency is stepping-in after a fire started at a
recycling business Wednesday morning.
The E.P.A is asking for a court order to stop operations at J&R Used Tire Service. The E.P.A says the company underestimated the amount of materials on site and says it didn't have an emergency plan for fire or police departments. The court order could stop all activities on the company's site.
The E.P.A also says an environmental consultant should be hired to investigate issues the fire may have created. The agency is looking into the affects of the heavy smoke, along with concerns about the runoff from water used to fight the fire. It says contaminants from the fire could get into neighboring properties, or the storm water and sewage systems.
