Illinois Womens Veterans Day celebrated

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) -- People celebrated a new holiday Thursday. It's Illinois Women Veterans Day to recognize the nearly 400,000 women in the U.S. serving the country.

A social hour was hosted by two Fighting Illini ROTC groups. Some took the day to honor those women serving. The resolution was passed by the House in March.

Several vets and volunteers gathered for an early Veterans Day potluck while discussing the resolution. It states there are 55,000 women veterans in the state.

There are also several historical facts about women in combat and it's important they aren't forgotten when veterans are honored for their service.

Veterans Day is Saturday and there are multiple ceremonies taking place throughout the area.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit, in Champaign, is made up of more than 120 women. They wrote letters to women veterans about the new holiday.
