Increase in deadly car crashes

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) -- Deadly car crashes are becoming too common in Central Illinois.

The number of people who died in 2017 is much higher than the year before. State troopers say they've noticed a lot of people just aren't paying attention and that's one of the main causes for a lot of these deadly accidents.

ISP District 10 covers most of Central Illinois. In this area 69 people died in car accidents in 2017. That's 10 higher than the year before. Troopers say the biggest problem is out on the interstates. That's where they've see the most deadly accidents this year.

But they say many deaths are preventable. A big part of the problem is distracted driving, but there are other reasons.

ISP Trooper Lillard says, "The troopers are seeing out here on a daily basis speeds in the triple digits. So we're seeing 106, 110, 112 miles an hour. It's a common occurrence out there and we just want the public to focus on doing the right thing."

Because of the increase in deaths on the road, state troopers will be patrolling more often than usual.

We're eleven days into the new year and already they've seen several deadly accidents. The most recent one state police responded to was due to bad weather conditions. ISP is urging people to slow down and please buckle up.
