URBANA -- Some brand new officers were on the University of Illinois campus Monday. More than 30 ROTC students officially joined the ranks of the Army, Navy, Marines or Air Force. They had their first official salute ceremony, the Arch of the Sabres, which is a military tradition. Each officer received his or her first salute in exchange for a silver dollar. One officer says it's an honor to continue her family's tradition.

"My dad did my oath of office," said U.S. Navy Ensign Kelly Lorentson. "He's a captain in the Navy. I'm third generation Navy so having him do that was pretty cool."

Illini astronaut Mike Hopkins led the officers in the military oath. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He also gave them a few words of advice for their future careers. That includes: "Don't forget to call your mom." The new officers are now getting ready for their next assignments.
