MACON COUNTY -- Residents who call 911 on a land line, could pay a little extra for their next emergency call. It's a difference of thirty cents, which doesn't seem like a whole lot, but it could go far for the county since the 911 system has been operating in red for years.

Currently, the surcharge is ninety cents per connection, but it could go to $1.25. That's the maximum allowed in the state for the 911 referendum. The difference, the board claims, could add $15,000 to the system. Some say it would be worth it.

The county board's finance committee approved the measure. It's set to go before the full board Thursday. One board member says the fee hasn't been raised since it was first originated more than a decade ago.
