CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) -- Police arrested a man for firing several shots into the air in front of downtown bars.

Police say they got 911 calls around 1:30 Saturday morning. They say the shots were fired near the intersection of Taylor and Walnut.

Malcolm Comer is accused of pulling the trigger after interviewing witnesses - officers found his car and caught him.

Police say they haven't gotten any reports of anyone hurt - and they didn't find any property damage, either, but people who work and visit downtown say they're worried the shooter did a different kind of damage.

In surveillance video, you can see Malcolm Comer walk down Walnut Street and fire a round of shots into the air. A puff of smoke sprays from his gun each time he shoots.

Police say he was drunk, so the shots may have been to celebrate something - but business owners and bar-goers aren't celebrating with him.

"I know that bars closed shortly afterwards, so it hurts business, and I wonder if our customers feel safe coming back."

Steven Wells says he grew up in Champaign.

"Idiots like that give gun owners a bad name."

"If you own a gun, be responsible, and that's irresponsible."

But the more people that hang out downtown-- the more officers that'll be there. That's reassuring to some businesses.

"I'm actually quite pleased with the police presence downtown, I know our bouncers have police on call, and they're here very quickly when they're needed here."

Many say this won't stop them from enjoying the area.

"You can't prevent idiots anywhere in the world, Champaign is no exception."

Comer was arrested for reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon.
