MATTOON -- A man facing robbery charges is now accused of beating his victim to death. It happened at the U.S. Grant Motel on Lake Land Blvd.

Police say 25-year old Joshua Mefford killed 58-year old Robert Montague who lived and worked at the motel. Mefford reportedly then fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

Police caught up with Mefford in Windsor, which is in Shelby County. Mefford was staying at the motel with a friend.

Police say Mefford saw Montague with the money bag and followed him to his room. They believe he punched Montague several times in the head before taking the money.

Neighbors found Montague's body Sunday. The Coles County Corner says Montague died from severe blows to the head. He suffered a fractured skull.

The State's Attorney says Mefford will be charged with robbery and murder. If convicted, he faces 60-years in prison.
