CHAMPAIGN -- Divers pull a 20-year old man's body out of a lake after several minutes of an underwater search. Emergency crews were called to west Champaign around 2:00 Saturday afternoon.
A family in the 1900-block of Maynard was having a private party in the lake. Police aren't confirming his condition right now.
The 20-year old was swimming with friends in the lake. Police say he swam out to a deep area and started screaming that he couldn't stay above water. That's when they say he went under.
Friends tried to swim out to him as quickly as they could but couldn't find him. Neighbors say the man had been underwater 15 minutes. Rescue divers pulled him out of the lake minutes later.
"We talked to everybody that saw it happen. Talked to all the witnesses. We have to make a determination of what happened. Right now, this doesn't look like anything more than an accident," Sgt. Jeff Vercler said.
The man was taken to the hospital. The family gathered at the home. Neighbors are praying he survives.
