Mayors from across the state say leaders at the Capitol are moving Illinois in the wrong direction. They met today to urge lawmakers to listen up.
Mayors from Danville, Springfield, Peoria and more all came to the Capitol City. They're pushing to change an idea floating around the Capitol. Lawmakers want to move money out the personal property tax, and put it toward teacher's pensions.
But mayors say no one is thinking about how that would devastate small local communities.
"I don't think they do that with recognition of the services that's gonna cut...that municipalities today provide and more importantly that our tax payers demand. That's the message that I think the governor and all legislators need to hear loud and clear."
If money is taken from local funds, mayors will be forced to cut police and fire staff.
