URBANA -- Nearly 100 people gathered at Meadowbrook Park to remember a mother and daughter who were killed when their car was hit by a semi on Interstate 55 last week. WCIA-3's Anthony Antoine was at the memorial.
"We felt a lot of mourning and a need to be able to get together and remember who they were because they were just special."
She's talking about Kimberly and Piper Britton. The mother and daughter were killed while driving on Interstate 55 near Joliet.
"The hole, I don't know if it would ever be filled."
Police believe the driver of the semi was speeding, rear-ended a car and caused a chain reaction which killed four people.
"We're all from back East and I've never had the opportunity to meet any of these people. Piper's classmates, her teachers, her baseball team, the people that... It's beautiful. It's beautiful. It lets me know that all of these people love them just as much as we do and that she had a family away from home because we weren't here, but they all are."
Tim Osburn was also in the car that day. The family says he's still in a coma and has no idea his daughter and her mother aren't here anymore. He had surgery Sunday and they will continue to be by his side. They won't bury Kimberly and Piper until he knows what happened.
"For those people who believe in prayer, prayers will always be welcome. Any kind of magic that you can send to help Tim would be great."
But, for this sister, it's the little things that let her know thy will always be with her.
"They're kind of still right here. Today, I was over at my sister's house and the butterflies were flying and one of them landed on my hand, so I know that she's here and Piper's here."
Piper Britton went to Yankee Ridge Elementary School. She was part of the Special Needs Program. Because of her love for her school, the family is asking all donations be sent to the Urbana School District.
