Brandon Young was charged for setting the trailer on fire. He was sentenced to 11 years for arson. But, as WCIA-3's Megan Brilley found, for the Richardson family, that's not enough, so they're making plans to go back to court.
"I hadn't heard nothing from him," Penny Knee said.
For 2 weeks Knee waited hoping her son's body wasn't inside the trailer. But, police spent weeks at the scene and started to smell human remains. Soon after, they found parts of Shawn Richardson's body.
"It was like getting kicked. I was totally numb." Knee said.
"It haunts me. From that day, it haunts me," Richardson's brother, Travis, said.
But what's even more haunting, the person arrested in connection to this was a man who had been friends with Richardson since grade school; Brandon Young.
"It was a total shock," Knee said.
Young told police they both went to the trailer to set it on fire, then things got out of control. Young was charged with arson but Knee says she knows there's more to this story.
"There's so many questions that I don't have answers to."
She's kept paperwork to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit. A court document quotes Young saying "he's sorry for killing his friend." Also, a coroner's report shows Richardson had smoke in his lungs. Pieces of paper that, to Knee, speak volumes.
"Something happened inside that trailer."
