Money alleged motive for murder

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - SPRINGFIELD -- Authorities arrested a woman after her stepfather died from a beating.

Police say they responded to the hospital about 7:30 am, Wednesday, December 7, for a 66-year old man who sustained a life-threatening head injury.

The victim had been brought to the hospital the night before after an incident at his home in the 1800-block of East Pine.

An initial report stated he'd fallen out of his wheelchair and struck his head, but family member later told investigators they believe his stepdaughter had beaten him over money issues.

The next day, 47-year old Christina Mathews was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated battery.

Sunday, detectives learned the victim had died. An autopsy was performed and, Wednesday, evidence was presented to a grand jury which charged Mathews with three counts of first degree murder.
