GIFFORD -- When the storm touched down, firefighters quickly took care of their families, then switched gears to help the community. About half of the members of the department either lost their homes or had significant damage.

But, they're thankful other first responders decided to come help. Departments from all over Central Illinois arrived to give Gifford firefighters the day off. It gave them the opportunity to pick up what's left of their homes.

Sullivan, Charleston and Cissna Park are just a few departments which came to the rescue. The show of support really means a lot to these people who aren't usually the victims.

Street signs and home addresses are gone, so local firefighters who weren't affected are working with the volunteers, directing traffic and helping them get to areas in need of attention.

The assistant fire chief says the old fire station in the middle of town was damaged, but the new station on the other side of town was not, so they’ll be back on their feet in no time.
