CHAMPAIGN -- Costs could double for students using MTD buses. Currently, the district pays nearly $316,000 to use MTD. If a new high school is built, it could cost $700,000. WCIA-3's Maggie Hockenberry finds out why the hike is possible.
Unit 4 hopes to build a new high school near Interstate Drive. The new location could create an issue for transportation costs.
"We do a majority of the middle school and high school transportation for Unit 4 and so, this moving the high school out to a new location which impacts routing and scheduling to accommodate that site change."
MTD would need to add an additional six buses for the new site. It could cost twice what Unit 4 pays now.
"It doesn't enjoy that same benefit that the current site does. There are no routes that go by there and so we would be in a situation where we would need to build routing around that new location."
Unit 4 is looking into other options, including possibly adding to its fleet of school buses.
"It is an important aspect for any school district getting the students to school."
MTD says these are rough estimates they're discussing with the district. They've partners with Unit 4 for years and hope to continue that partnership. The cost of a new school bus is about $90,000 while a new MTD bus is about $500,000.
