DECATUR -- It's the first day on the job for the new superintendent of Decatur Public Schools. WCIA-3's Anthony Antoine has more.

Lisa Taylor will be the first to tell you there's a lot of work to do. With the retirement of Gloria Davis, the district went on a nationwide search. It looked at nearly fifty applicants and interviewed about six people.

But, Lisa Taylor was right under their noses. For twelve years, Taylor's been part of the public school district.

"There was a real strong desire for someone who knows the district. Someone who knows Illinois. Someone who knows our system in Decatur."

As the new superintendent, she isn't wasting any time.

"It's business as usual around here."

And she's paying attention to Governor Quinn.

"Illinois is more in a crisis situation than some states, so we'll be watching those conversations very closely. How much will schools be funded?"

Like many school districts, Decatur is millions of dollars in the hole.

"In our budget reductions, we really tried to stay away from people and direct cuts to the classroom. Without teachers, it's hard to teach and that's the most important thing for us."

Taylor wants to attract and maintain quality teachers.

"Decatur's a tough place to work, but we have some of the best teachers there are because it's a great, challenging, rewarding job to teach in Decatur."

As well as create a positive learning environment for her kids.

"Facilities are a huge piece for Decatur right now. Eisenhauer has a brand new school."

And MacArthur will have a new school as well, but she will always lean on a few kind words from Gloria Davis.

"Always make the right decision, always do what you think is right; what you believe is best for kids."

This was a nationwide search and district officials say Taylor was the best person for the job.
