Places like the Times Center can help, but it only takes in men. When you have an entire family, the mom and kids have to look someplace else.
The few family shelters that do exist take days or weeks to get into. It's time some families don't have.
That's why United Way is working with local churches and groups to start an emergency family shelter. The idea is that churches can be "on call."
They'll give families a place to stay while they get back on their feet. This way, they don't have to be split up.
United Way is working to get a program in place by winter. They're sure the need is there since they hear from 4 - 5 families a month in this type of situation.
