The petitions come from a group called the Yes! for Independent Maps Campaign. Right now, politicians can draw district lines to help their own party.
The Yes Campaign wants to have an eleven-person commission do the redistricting with an equal number of Republicans and Democrats. It's a change some think needs to be made.
District lines are redrawn every ten years. The deadline for petitions is April 1. You can sign the petition at various locations in the area.
Just under 300,000 signatures are needed to get on the ballot. Ryan Roth, public policy director, says they would like to get between 400,000 - 500,000 as a cushion since they believe the petitions will be challenged.
Redistricting will go into effect after the 2020 census.
