MATTOON -- An area man has reached a pretty incredible milestone. This past weekend, David Myers surpassed more than 20 gallons of donated blood.

The lifetime achievement started in his early 20's. Since then he's donated 162 times and potentially saved nearly 500 lives. He was given a plaque for his achievement, but says he donates for a more important reason.

"I'm saving lives," said David Myers. "An average of about six lives get saved per unit of blood and I think I've saved over 480 lives in my lifetime so far."

A person can give blood once every eight weeks. Myers will be 67 when he hits his next goal of 25 gallons.
