PETERSBURG -- One of the many stories lost in New Salem's history is the truth about the relationship between Abraham Lincoln and Ann Rutledge. According to stories told through villagers of Our Town during that time, Lincoln and Rutledge shared more than a friendship.

The story goes Abe met Ann in New Salem when he stayed at her family-owned tavern. It's said he fell in love with her, courted her and even proposed. But, Ann's life was cut short. She died from typhoid in 1835 and is buried in Petersburg. It's said her death changed Abe forever.

Historians continue to argue those accounts to this day. Guides at New Salem share multiple angles of the story with their visitors.
