GEORGETOWN -- Soon Our Town will have a safe place to shoot. An open field is the new home of the Otto Newlin Shooting Range. City officials agreed to lease the land about a year-and-a-half ago. Since then, board members have been working to get it open. WCIA-3's Erica Quednau hears from people who are excited for it to open because of what it's going to offer.

For years, the field has been like this; empty and open. But soon, it will be filled with people learning to shoot.

"Rather than let it sit empty, we thought we'd do something for the community."

So, in about two months, it will be. All this dirt will become the Otto Newlin Shooting Range. It's something people in Our Town have been waiting for.

"We've got a lot of people supporting us and we appreciate it. They waited patiently. We constantly get calls, practically everyday, every other day."

Kenny West is the vice president of the Range Board. He's been working with the city to get this place up and running and says he can't wait to teach people about the art of shooting.

"Safety. We teach that and preach that."

"About five of the members took time out of their day for my son and he leaves Sunday for the Marines for eight years and it really helped. He didn't know anything about guns and now he got it down."

Just the latest step in their long journey.

"It's been a long process, but we're happy where we're at now."

"This will be a good thing for the community and it's something we do need for sure."

You have to become a member to shoot at the range. The cost is $100 per year.
