More space for students will also allow to Fine Arts students to be closer to campus. Their studios are currently on the outskirts, so safety can be an issue when working late hours.
The new addition is being built on the west side of campus. It will include a black box theater, new studios and classrooms. It will also expand the lobby and costume shop already in place.
The project will cost about $8 million. The new addition will be paid for with money the college has saved. Parkland's Department of Fine Arts says it will give its students valuable hands-on experience.
Construction will get underway next month. It's expected to be finished by the fall of 2014.
