SPRINGFIELD -- They courageously serve our country, but their children sometimes take on the burden of that service role. A military base support group, led by Lt. Governor Sheila Simon, provides a place for kids to turn.

Simon says children of military families may go through more hardship than just saying goodbye to classmates when they move. The committee is looking for ways schools can better assist military children during a transition.

Some of the ways include strengthening school policies surrounding enrollment and graduation requirements, plus placement in classes and extracurricular activities. Illinois is home to three military bases.
