ILLINOIS -- There are changes coming to criminal lineups. Governor Quinn signed a bill last week which aims to eliminate mistaken identity.

The Sangamon County Sheriff's Department is for any legislation which increases the transparency of the department. This bill is designed to do that by helping eliminate the possibility of false identification.

The bill requires a blind lineup. It means an independent administrator will conduct the lineup and won't know the identity of the suspect. The Sangamon County Sheriff's Department already has some rules in place which align with the legislation.

The bill also calls for videotaping the identification process if the witness agrees. Current law only requires lineups be photographed and suspects not look substantially different from other individuals in the lineup. The bill is effective January 2015.
