DECATUR -- The police department says its hard work is paying off and has the numbers to prove it. There were more than 480-violenct crimes in 2011. In 2012, the number dropped to 350. The number of homicides went down too, dropping from ten to six.

The department teamed up with the city council this year for community walks. They knocked on doors and got input from neighbors. Officers believe that was key in the decrease in crime. The number of robberies also went down, dropping from 124 to 104.

There were also more police cars on the street Monday than usual. Operation Boomerang had officers targeting people will illegal firearms. They teamed up with the Macon County State's Attorney, the FBI and DEA. Leaders expect to make dozens of arrests.
