Program promotes healthy, safe lifestyle for students

URBANA -- More students are walking to school. Leal Elementary launched its Walking School Bus program Tuesday. It's all about encouraging a healthy and safe route to class.

Parents are leading groups of kids to school and students get a chance to walk with friends. Organizers say they hope the Walking School Bus will help kids learn more about their neighborhood and traffic safety.

URBANA -- The spotlight is on a new program aimed at promoting a healthy and safe lifestyle. Some Leal Elementary School students will be kicking off the program by Walking to School. The kids will hit the pavement April 15.

They'll have adult supervision. Walking to School is a grant-funded project in conjunction with the Safe Routes to School program through the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District.
